Toothbrush Facts

•    Toothbrushes are the key to good oral health. Oral Health is directly related to physical health. How often you change your brush really matters! 

•    Don't EVER share your toothbrush! A single toothbrush can have 10 million bacterial living on it. Certain Bacteria is contagious. Flu virus, Herpes Simplex 1 (Cold Sores), Streptococci Bacteria (Strep), E. Coli, Coli form Bacteria, Candida (yeast), hepatitis A, B and C, even gum disease can be contagious. Your mouth is like an amusement park for bacteria. Viruses can survive for many days on a toothbrush. 

•    Don't let toothbrushes touch in the cupholder! If your daughter/son has a sore throat from bacterial infection or your husband/wife has a mild form of bacterial gum disease. Chances are these germs will end up on your brush.

•    We have seen cases where a child develops gum disease because they shared a toothbrush with a parent who already had the disease. 

•    Sharing a toothbrush is kind of like having unprotected sex. You might be ok but you could catch something gross. 

•    Remember the plaque you are removing from your teeth is bacteria that sit on your brush until you use it again. 

•    Don't brush where you flush!! FLUSHING makes the bacteria airborne and it can travel up to six feet and land on your brush. Store your toothbrush as far from the toilet as you can. 

•    Don't cover your toothbrush thinking you are protecting it. The moist environment in these closed containers is actually worse. Don't store your brush in cabinets or drawers bacteria love dark moist environments.

•    Brushing your teeth 3 times a day removes harmful bacteria from building up in your mouth. It protects your gums, freshens your breath and prevents tartar build up.

•    Don't forget to floss! 

•    Flouride prevents cavities.

•    Brushing to hard can cause gums to recede, tooth sensitivity, and loose teeth. 

•    Best way to limit bacteria on your brush is to replace it on a regular basis! 

•    Bacteria causes gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath! 

•    Use disposable cups in the bathroom or replace the cup every day. 

•    The body is able to fight off most bacteria just use common sense and replace your brush every 3 months.

•    Sugar is the major cause of tooth decay.

•    There are so many options when it comes to buying a toothbrush, it can be overwhelming. This is the toothbrush we use for our own family and patients and we all love it.

•    Anytime you are sick replace your toothbrush when you start to feel better. 

•    Always use soft bristles. Hard bristles and vigorous brushing an nick the gums and allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream. 

•    Don't touch the top of the toothpaste tube to the head of the brush. Families often share the toothpaste and if someone is sick and touches their brush with the head of the tube it becomes contaminated. 

•    Don't let toothbrushes touch in the toothbrush holder. Germs can be transmitted. 

•    Don't put your toothbrush in the microwave or dishwasher to sanitize it. It damages the bristles. 

•    Imagine the bacteria on a cup in the bathroom for more than 3 months!!!!!! 

•    Store your brush in an upright position and allow it to air dry completely before you use it again. Bacteria thrive in a warm moist environment.

•    Don’t put your toothbrush in a drawer! Bacteria thrive in that dark area.

•    Mixing up your toothbrush is a bad mistake. Put your name on it!
